Queen Alicent and Otto Hightower will definitely begin to see consequences of their long game, and Rhaenyra will be coming for the Iron Throne with Blood and Cheese (wait for them, oh boy) paving the way. With that said, this series has been plotted out for four seasons, and that plan could change, but it’s unlikely that we will see the entire war take place in Season 2. Hopefully, we will at least see the inevitable showdown between Daemon and (Mini-Me) Aemond, and if that plot point follows the Fire and Blood book, both men should be very afraid. The second season of the celebrated series was confirmed by its makers just five days after the premiere of the opening edition. Despite the quick renewal, the follow-up installment is set to be released a whole two years after its predecessors.

Frames: HBO's Memorable TV Moments
Serving as a prequel to the 2011 show, House of The Dragon draws inspiration from Martin’s 2018 book named Fire & Blood. Following the immense success of season one, its successor is set to drop later this year, with the majority of the cast returning to occupy their roles. The war was over succession of the throne, and the seeds were planted during the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen. However, shortly after his death, a council gave the throne to Aegon II Targaryen, the first child of Viserys’ current wife, Alicent Hightower, and the king’s eldest male heir. This sparked a civil war between the family that eventually threatened all of Westeros.

Jefferson Hall has the unusual task of playing two separate Lannisters, as he will be appearing as twins Lord Jason Lannister and Tyland Lannister. Per HBO, "Jason is the Lord of Casterly Rock. Tyland Lannister is a crafty and calculating politician." Collider notes that the relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent sours to the point that they "become fierce rivals" in Fire & Blood, "both vying for the honor of claiming the throne for themselves and their own heirs." Emma D'Arcy will transform into Targaryen royalty, as she poses as the elder version of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. The first images from the set of House of the Dragon spotlighted her as one of the key cast members pictured alongside Matt Smith's Prince Daemon Targaryen at an undisclosed beach location.
Emily Carey as Young Alicent Hightower
He eventually claims the largest living dragon in Westeros, though he has to pay a price. Ashton made his debut on the 2018 historical film Peterloo, and later acted in the TV series Deep Water, The Bay, and Red Rose. Spokes is an English screen and stage actor who has starred in several shows including the soap opera Casualty and the miniseries The Ipcress File. After HotD, he's set to appear in the third Magic Mike movie, Magic Mike's Last Dance. After the 10-year time jump, Laena is married to Daemon and mother to two twin girls, Baela and Rhaena. She's also a fierce dragonrider and is bonded to the oldest and largest dragon in Westeros, Vhagar.
Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole

Daughter of the Hand, Alicent Hightower is played by Emily Carey in her youth and by Olivia Cooke as an adult. Because of her father’s position, Alicent was raised in the Red Keep and grew up as a friend to Princess Rhaenyra. House of the Dragon isn’t the first time that Emily Carey has played the younger version of a strong and powerful woman. She also appears as the 12 year-old version of Diana in 2017’s Wonder Woman and as the 14 year-old version of Lara Croft in the 2018 Tomb Raider film adaptation.

Emily Carey is set to star opposite Alcock in a recurring role as Alicent Hightower, per THR. Ser Criston is the Dornish common-born son of the Steward of Blackhaven, who arrives in King's Landing with nothing but his skill with a sword. Antonia (seen left above) was born in Birmingham, England, and previously appeared on the Netflix shows Get Even and Stay Close. Alicent and Viserys' second-born Helaena is a quiet, sensitive girl who cares for her bug collection. She also has a habit talking to herself, saying phrases that sound a lot like prophecies.
Graham McTavish as Ser Harrold Westerling
Prior to his death, Viserys appointed his only daughter from his first marriage, Rhaenyra Targaryen, as his heir. However, he was ultimately succeeded by Aegon II Targaryen, the first child of his marriage to Alicent Hightower. Obviously, the show will continue to track the Targaryen lineage about 300 years prior to near-extinction level on Game of Thrones.
Kenna will play Ser Alfred Broome, one of the senior nights in the garrison at Dragonstone. House of the Dragon has an uphill battle following the controversial ending of Game of Thrones while adapting a very unconventional book to screen. The show is based on Fire & Blood, a fictional history book by George R.R. Martin that is not written or structured like a typical novel. In order to cover all the relevant events, House of the Dragon Season 1 employed sporadic time-skips that were not universally popular among fans. However, now that the timeline is stabilizing in Season 2, we can start to expand the roster. With her rightful claim ignored, you can probably think of her a bit like the Daenerys Targaryen of this series — at least for Dany’s first few seasons — though the two bear few other similarities.
House of the Dragon: Season 1/Cast
Ser Otto Hightower served as the Hand of the King to Viserys, a loyal servant of the realm. Milly Alcock (Upright) played a younger version of Princess Rhaenyra in the earlier parts of the first season. Set hundreds of years prior to the events of HBO's original fantasy saga, House of the Dragon season one transported us to a Westeros that was still ruled by the Targaryens and their closest allies. The House of the Dragon cast swelled to include a long list of prominent figures as the action played out in the lead-up to the Dance of Dragons that's coming in House of the Dragon season 2. Thrones fans may recall when young Shireen Baratheon and Ser Davos briefly discuss the battle as she reads a history book about it.
If you watched Game of Thrones you of course remember the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen, and her quest to take back the Iron Throne. From that period, House of the Dragon brings us back nearly 200 years to the time in Westerosi history when House Targaryen was at the height of its power. The series begins with the reign of King Viserys I, the fifth Targaryen ruler, the question of his succession, and the events that unfold after he names his daughter, Rhaenyra, heir — a title a woman had never assumed. Daughter to King Viserys' Hand of the King, Otto Hightower, Alicent befriended Rhaenyra Targaryen from a young age. However, this relationship diminished greatly once Alicent, with pressure from her father, began spending more time with the king after his first wife's death, eventually leading to their marriage.
I suspect that the strategy set-up will take up much of this second season, but unlike with the book, Rhaenyra might even leave Dragonstone to participate. And we will literally see fire rain down from the sky when the two sides have to force allegiance from reluctant settlements. During this Targaryen Civil War, George R.R. Martin killed off half the population of Westeros and, as noted previously, nearly every member of the blondest family. However, the HBO series has already tweaked parts of the book, so there’s no reason to believe that everything will go down as Martin wrote in the lore.
Rhaenyra is supported by her uncle and later husband, Daemon Targaryen, as well as her former mother-in-law, Rhaenys Velaryon. Though she is supposed to be next in line for the throne, not everyone will support her claim. Before we get into the characters themselves, it’s worth remembering what the Dance of Dragons, the brief and bloody Targaryen civil war that House of the Dragon chronicles, was actually about. The prequel series’ latest trailer, released on Thursday, already throws a few names at viewers and gives them a whole lot of pale, blond people to keep track of. To help you get a sense of where the show’s going, and what’s even happening in the trailer, here are the characters we’ve seen so far and where they’re at in the beginning of the story. Mellos is a voice of reason amidst the more crafty and calculating members of the King’s court.
